La Romana is de op twee na grootste stad van de Dominicaanse Republiek met een geschatte bevolking van 130.426 binnen de stadsgrenzen. Het is een hoofdstad van de zuidoostelijke provincie La Romana, tegenover Catalina Island. De stad ligt in de buurt van verschillende andere steden, zoals San Pedro de Macorís en de nationale hoofdstad Santo Domingo de Guzmán. De stad is een centrum voor een groeiende toeristische industrie met verschillende nabijgelegen lokale resortplekken, zoals het strand Bayahibe, Dominicus, Casa de Campo en het groeiende aantal golfresorts dat het gebied omringt.
